Temple History

Situated on the serene Monikoot hill in Hajo, Assam, the Hayagriva Madhava Temple is a sacred pilgrimage site holding deep significance for both Hindus and Buddhists. Built in the 16th century, the temple is dedicated to the Hayagriva incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Buddhists also venerate the site, believing it to be the place where Gautama Buddha attained Nirvana. The structure exhibits classic stone architecture, with its exterior walls embellished with impressive elephant carvings and intricate sculptures reminiscent of traditional Assamese craftsmanship. The adjacent large pond, known to house large turtles, is fed by natural springs and adds a calm, meditative air to the complex. During the lively festivals of Doul Mahotsava (Holi) and Janmashtami, the temple buzzes with devotion. It remains a beautiful symbol of religious syncretism and ancient history in Northeast India.
