Historical Significance

Kareng Ghar is a magnificent royal palace located in Garhgaon, near Sivasagar, which once served as the glorious historical capital of the mighty Ahom Kingdom. This distinctive four-story, stepped pyramid-like structure is an outstanding example of advanced medieval Assamese architecture. Set amidst lush green lawns, the sprawling brick edifice features ornate pillars, intricate chambers, guard rooms, and royal royal quarters that overlook the countryside. Like many Ahom structures, it was initially constructed from wood and later rebuilt with durable stone and brick. Secret tunnels and an underground cellar were purportedly used as secure escape routes during military invasions. The top floor offers panoramic views of the surrounding rural landscape. Preserved as a testament to Ahom resilience and regal splendor, Kareng Ghar is an essential destination for anyone fascinated by the extensive history of Northeast India.
