What To Look For

The "Sutlej-Yamuna Link (SYL) Canal" structures, which represent the complex and historic water-sharing engineering of the Punjab plains.
Floating "Lotus Carpets" (Nelumbo nucifera) in the shallower parts of the Harike wetland, which bloom in large pink and white patches during the summer.
The "Harike Pattan" confluence, where the green-tinted Beas and the muddy-brown Sutlej meet to create the largest man-made wetland in North India.
The elusive "Indus River Dolphin" (found only in the Beas in India); look for a subtle splash or a dark grey dorsal fin in the deeper river channels.
Sacred ghats and pilgrimage infrastructure.
Unusual rock formations shaped by water erosion.

Pro Tips

Explore the "Ropar Wetland" via a rented bicycle; the path along the Sutlej riverbank is flat, paved, and offers a peaceful alternative to the busy national highways.

Respect the "Canal System" safety; the Bhakra Main Line and other canals have extremely fast, deceptive currents. Never attempt to swim in them, as they lack the shallow "ghats" found on natural rivers.

Note that the "Beas River" is the only river in India where the rare "Indus River Dolphin" is found; hire a local guide in the Amritsar-Taran Taran belt for a specialized dolphin-spotting trek.

Visit the "Harike Pattan" (confluence of Beas and Sutlej); it is North India’s largest man-made wetland and a major stopover for migratory birds from Siberia during the winter months.

Wear long sleeves in early morning and evening.

Be cautious of undercurrents and submerged obstacles.
