About Lachen

Lachen is a spectacular, less-explored village in North Sikkim, standing at an elevation of around 2,750 meters. Surrounded by towering snow-clad peaks and alpine pastures, it serves as the crucial base camp for expeditions to the sacred and high-altitude Gurudongmar Lake. The village itself offers tranquil vibes, wooden houses, and the peaceful Lachen Monastery, giving visitors an authentic Himalayan experience.

Pro Tips

Note that plastic water bottles are strictly banned in North Sikkim (Lachen/Lachung); carry reusable metal flasks which can be refilled at local "Hot Water" stations.

Carry sufficient cash for the North Sikkim circuit; ATMs are virtually non-existent beyond Mangan, and satellite-based card machines in Gurudongmar area rarely function.

Prepare for the "Buffer Day" rule; always keep an extra day in your itinerary for Gangtok, as landslides during the monsoon can block the NH10 lifeline for 24-48 hours.

Apply for the "Nathu La" and "North Sikkim" permits through a registered Sikkim tourism agent at least 48 hours in advance; these cannot be obtained directly by individual tourists.

Wear sunglasses against snow reflection UV rays.

Wear a light rain jacket even if clear skies are forecast.
