Goa Airport to South Goa — Skip the Rs 1,500 Cab Trap

By someone who once paid Rs 1,800 to get from Dabolim to Agonda, and then watched the next three tourists negotiate it down to Rs 900 at the same taxi stand. Never again.
Landing at Goa's Dabolim airport for the first time is exciting. Landing there a second time, after you have already made all the transport mistakes, is a completely different experience. You know exactly where to walk, exactly who not to talk to, and exactly how much to pay.
If you are heading to South Goa — Colva, Benaulim, Palolem, Agonda, Cavelossim, Canacona — the distance from Dabolim airport is 45 to 75 kilometres depending on where exactly you are going. That distance, depending on how you handle the next 20 minutes after landing, will cost you anywhere from Rs 400 to Rs 2,000. Same road. Same distance. Entirely different experience based on what you know.
This guide tells you everything I have learned from 4 trips and one disastrous first attempt.

Your Options from Dabolim Airport to South Goa
| Option | Cost to Palolem | Time | Hassle | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pre-booked cab (Savaari/MakeMyTrip) | Rs 900–1,100 | 75–90 min | None | ✅ Best overall |
| Airport prepaid taxi booth | Rs 1,200–1,600 | 75–90 min | Medium | ⚠️ Overpriced |
| Negotiate with taxi outside arrivals | Rs 900–1,400 | 75–90 min | High | ❌ Stress not worth it |
| KTC Bus to Margao + local bus | Rs 80–120 | 3–4 hours | Very high | 🎒 Solo backpackers only |
| Ola/Rapido/Uber | Frequently unavailable | Varies | Very high | ❌ Not reliable at airport |
Option 1: Pre-Booked Cab — What I Use Now Every Time
This is the only option where you know the exact price before you land, the driver is waiting with your name on a board, and there is no negotiation or drama involved. You pay the same amount in the middle of a peak October weekend as you would on a Tuesday in July.
For South Goa destinations, a pre-booked airport cab costs Rs 900 to Rs 1,100 for a standard sedan (4 passengers, 2 medium suitcases). For Agonda and Palolem specifically, which are the furthest South Goa points at 72–78 km, it goes up to Rs 1,100–1,300.
The only red flag: book at least 3–4 hours before your flight lands. Same-day bookings sometimes result in no driver being assigned. I have seen this happen to others, though not to me personally.
Option 2: The Airport Prepaid Taxi Booth (And Why I Avoid It)
There is a prepaid taxi booth inside the arrivals hall, run by the Goa government taxi association. It has a printed rate chart on the wall. It looks official. The rates are fixed.
The problem is those fixed rates are approximately 30–40% higher than a pre-booked private cab. To Palolem, the booth rate in 2026 is Rs 1,450. The same journey in a pre-booked cab is Rs 950.
The one reason to use it: if your flight is delayed or rescheduled and you did not pre-book. In that case, the booth is your only reliable option other than negotiating outside — and the booth is significantly less stressful than negotiating outside.
Hidden charge to know: some booth taxis charge Rs 50–100 extra for a large suitcase. Ask before you get in.
Option 3: Negotiating With Taxis Outside Arrivals — The Honest Assessment
The moment you step outside Dabolim arrivals, there are 40–60 taxi drivers. Most of them will quote Rs 1,500–2,000 for Palolem. If you look confident and walk past them, someone will follow and drop to Rs 1,100–1,200. If you look tired and lost, you are paying Rs 1,500.
I have done this. I got Rs 900 once when I was feeling brave. I also paid Rs 1,700 on my first trip when I just wanted to be done with it.
My honest verdict: the energy spent negotiating after a flight, with luggage, is not worth the Rs 200–300 you might save versus a pre-booked cab. Book it in advance.
Option 4: The Rs 400 Bus Trick (For People Travelling Light)
This is real. Very few tourists know it.
The KTC (Kadamba Transport Corporation) runs buses from just outside the airport gates to Margao (Madgaon) bus stand. Cost: Rs 40–50. Time: 45 minutes. From Margao, there are regular local buses to Colva (Rs 20), Benaulim (Rs 25), and onward connections toward Palolem and Canacona (Rs 60–90 total).
Total cost Dabolim to Colva by bus: Rs 65–80. Total cost Dabolim to Palolem by bus + connections: Rs 130–180.
The brutal honest catch: this works if you are travelling with one small backpack, you land before 6 PM (buses get sparse after that), and you have 2–3 hours to spare. If you have a large suitcase, it is a nightmare. If you land at 9 PM, buses are nearly done for the day. I would only recommend this to solo backpackers on a genuine budget trip.
Ola and Uber at Goa Airport — Why They Don't Work
I have tried this three times. Twice, no driver accepted the booking for 20 minutes and then cancelled. Once, a driver accepted and showed up 40 minutes late. Goa's app-cab ecosystem outside Panaji is genuinely unreliable in 2026, especially at the airport. Do not plan around it.
What I Would Do If I Were You
If you have 2 or more people and any luggage: pre-book a cab at least the day before you fly. Pay Rs 950–1,100. Have the driver's number saved. Walk out of arrivals knowing where you are going. That is the correct answer.
If you are a solo backpacker landing before 5 PM with just a backpack: take the KTC bus to Margao and figure out onward connections from there. It is genuinely easy once you have done it once and costs almost nothing.
3 Mistakes I Made That You Should Not
- Waited to book until I was at the airport. Pre-book the cab from home.
- Assumed Ola/Uber would work. They do not, reliably, at Dabolim.
- Negotiated in the wrong spot. The drivers right outside the exit doors know you just landed and quote tourist prices. Walk further to the car park and the prices drop slightly — but just pre-book and avoid all of this.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a bus from Goa airport directly to Palolem? No direct bus exists. The KTC bus from the airport goes to Margao bus stand only. From Margao, you take a second bus toward Canacona. The total journey takes 3–4 hours. Not suitable with heavy luggage or late arrivals.
What is the prepaid taxi rate from Goa airport to Colva in 2026? The government prepaid booth rate to Colva is approximately Rs 800–950. A pre-booked private cab will cost Rs 650–750 for the same route. Colva is much closer to the airport than Palolem so the gap is smaller.
Can I take Ola or Uber from Goa airport? In theory yes, in practice it is unreliable. Drivers frequently cancel airport bookings or take very long to arrive. Do not depend on it, especially late at night or during early mornings.
How long does it take to reach Palolem from Goa airport? 75 to 90 minutes in normal traffic. During peak season (October–January) on weekends, it can stretch to 100–110 minutes through Margao town traffic.
Is it safe to take the local bus from Margao to Palolem? Yes, completely safe. Local KTC buses on this route are used daily by Goa residents. The route is well-travelled and the buses are regular during daytime. After 7–8 PM, frequency drops significantly.
