Historical Facts

Kaup (or Kapu) Beach is a stunning coastal destination in the Udupi district of Karnataka. The beach is most famous for its 100-foot-high lighthouse built by the British in 1901, perched on a rocky outcrop against the backdrop of the Arabian Sea. Alongside the lighthouse, the beach features a clean stretch of sand, historic ruined forts, and a calm atmosphere. Visitors enjoy climbing the lighthouse for panoramic views of the coast, especially during sunset.

Pro Tips

Climb the lighthouse around 5 PM for the best sunset views (check timing as it opens only for a few hours in the evening).

Be careful while walking on the rocks near the lighthouse as they can be slippery.

Be prepared for the "Gokarna Trek" terrain; the trail between Kudle and Half Moon Beach involves steep basaltic rock scrambling that requires sturdy grip shoes.

Note that many Karwar beaches are under naval jurisdiction; stay within public boundaries to avoid trespassing into sensitive INS Kadamba zones.

Visit during post-monsoon season for the best water conditions.

Check tide timings before planning water activities.
