Perched dramatically in the lush Western Ghats near Lonavala, Lohagad Fort (the 'Iron Fort') is an exceptionally scenic and well-preserved Maratha fortress. Historically utilized heavily by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj to store vast treasuries, it stands at an elevation of over 3,300 feet. The fort acts as an incredible popular trekking destination, especially during the monsoon season when the surrounding mountains are carpeted in vibrant emerald green and mist. The trek is relatively easy, passing through four massive main gates—Maha Darwaza, Ganesh Darwaza, Hanuman Darwaza, and Narayan Darwaza. The crowning feature of the fort is the 'Vinchu Kata', a long, narrow naturally formed fortified ridge that resembles a scorpion's tail.
