Pro Tips

Use the toy train from Neral to Matheran for a scenic journey through forested hills.

Motor vehicles are not allowed in Matheran, so wear comfortable walking shoes.

Note that Matheran is a "Vehicle-Free Zone"; be prepared to walk or hire a horse/hand-pulled rickshaw from Dasturi Naka to reach your hotel.

Check the "Firefly Festival" dates (May-June) in Bhandardara or Purushwadi; these are highly seasonal and require booking eco-campsites months in advance.

Use sunscreen with high SPF due to stronger UV rays at altitude.

Schedule your Matheran trip via the Neral-Matheran Toy Train, but have a "Plan B" (Shared Taxi) ready as the narrow-gauge track is prone to closures during heavy rains.
