Ranthambore in Rajasthan is world-famous for its dry deciduous forests and the majestic ruins of the Ranthambore Fort that provide a dramatic backdrop for tiger sightings. Corbett National Park in Uttarakhand is another premier destination, being India’s oldest national park and offering a unique mix of hilly terrain and riverine landscapes. Both parks have high tiger densities, but Corbett also offers the unique experience of staying in forest rest houses deep within the park boundaries.

Booking must be done through the official government portal for each park. For Ranthambore, there is a choice between a 6-seater Gypsy or a 20-seater Canter. Corbett is divided into multiple zones like Dhikala, Bijrani, and Jhirna, with Dhikala being the most sought-after. It is highly recommended to book your safari 90 to 120 days in advance, especially for the peak season, as permits are limited and sell out very quickly.

The Desert National Park near Jaisalmer offers a starkly different experience, focusing on species that have adapted to the harsh Thar Desert. However, for lush green landscapes and bird-watching, the post-monsoon months of November to February are most pleasant.

This allows for 4 to 6 safari drives, significantly increasing your chances of spotting elusive predators like tigers or leopards. Many parks also offer nature walks, bird-watching tours, and visits to nearby tribal villages, which require extra time. A longer stay also helps you appreciate the smaller wonders of the forest, from unique insects to diverse flora, often missed on a single drive.

Pack lightweight, neutral-colored clothing (khaki, olive, or brown) to blend in with the surroundings; avoid bright colors or strong perfumes. Essential gear includes a good pair of binoculars, a camera with a telephoto lens, a hat, sunglasses, and high-SPF sunscreen. Depending on the season, carry a windcheater or light woolen layers for early morning drives, which can be surprisingly chilly.
