Meghalaya, particularly the plateau of Cherrapunji (Sohra) and Mawsynram, receives some of the highest rainfall in the world. This results in an incredible density of massive waterfalls, including Nohkalikai (India’s tallest plunge fall), Seven Sisters Falls, and Elephant Falls. The region’s unique geology, with steep sandstone cliffs and deep limestone gorges, creates the perfect stage for these dramatic drops. The best time to see them in their full glory is from June to October.

The peak season for waterfalls is during the monsoon (July to September) and the immediate post-monsoon months (October to November). This is when the cascades are at their most powerful, and the surrounding vegetation is a vibrant, lush green. However, keep in mind that extremely heavy rains can sometimes lead to road closures or restricted access to the base of the falls for safety reasons. For a more balanced experience with clearer skies, the months of September and October are ideal.

Nohkalikai is the tallest plunge waterfall in India, dropping nearly 1,115 feet into a turquoise blue pool. Its name, "Fall of Ka Likai," is tied to a tragic Khasi legend about a mother whose grief led her to jump from the cliff. Regardless of the sad story, the visual impact of the falls is breathtaking. You can view it from a well-maintained plateau, and on clear days, you can see all the way into the plains of Bangladesh across the border.
